Sunderland's festive fixtures: New Year trip to Blackpool and many miles to travel

Sunderland will play four games in 11 days during their usual busy festive schedule, including an interesting New Year’s Day trip to Blackpool.

Fixtures around the festive period always feature highly in fans’ thoughts on fixture release day, and it’s fair to say the January 1 trip to the Lancashire seaside has many Black Cats fans excited.

Before that though, they face a trip to Portsmouth on December 22 – their final game before Christmas.

In the traditional Boxing Day fixture Jack Ross’ side will play host to Bradford City, and then host Shrewsbury Town in between Christmas and New Year on December 29.

It doesn’t get much easier for the Black Cats after that initial festive period either.

Just four days after making the 694-mile round-trip to Fratton Park on the south coast, Ross’ side are due to travel to Charlton Athletic on Saturday, January 5.

That game could need rescheduling, however, if Sunderland make it to the third round of the FA Cup.

The Black Cats are used to entering the oldest cup competition at that stage but as a result of their relegation to League One they will have to get victories in round one and two to reach that stage this term.

If Sunderland don’t make it to the third round of the FA Cup then they will travel a total of 1,554 miles in just 15 days.
