Memorable opening day fixtures in Scunthorpe United's recent history

Scunthorpe United will find out who they’ll open their 2018/19 campaign against on Thursday as the new season edges closer.

The Iron will be waiting to plan their journeys as they look to embark on another promotion push.

They will want to get off to a good start and get their first three points of the season early on.

Of course whatever the result on the opening day it won’t define the Iron’s season.

2016/17: Scunthorpe United 3 -1 Bristol Rovers

After coming so close to the play-offs the previous season, hopes were high that Scunthorpe could reach the top six the next season.

In their opening match they came up against newly-promoted Bristol Rovers, which would not be easy with the Gas riding high after coming up from League Two.

At half time it looked like the Iron had it all to do trailing to a Matty Taylor strike.

But they turned it around in the second half with three superb strikes.

Kevin van Veen, Josh Morris and Kyle Wootton all got themselves on the scoresheet with three very good finishes.

It gave Scunthorpe the platform to go on to the top of the league, losing only one game between August and mid-October.

2015/16: Burton Albion 2-1 Scunthorpe United

In contrast, this is one opening day fixture that Scunthorpe fans would much rather forget.

As is the usual at the start of most seasons optimism is high and the start of this season was no different.

A game against newly-promoted Burton Albion, who were not fancied at the start of the season seemed like a perfect opening day fixture.

The Iron bought into it as more than 1,200 fans made the trip to the Midlands to hopefully see the Iron take the win.

What they saw was very different.

Luke Williams and Niall Canavan were both taken off in the first half with serious injuries and then in the second half Stuart Beavon gave the Brewers the lead.

But worse was to follow when goalkeeper Luke

Scunthorpe United midfielder Sam Mantom closing in on move to Southend United

Scunthorpe United midfielder Sam Mantom is close to joining Southend United.

Mantom, who has a year left on his Scunthorpe contract, spent the second half of last season loan at Roots Hall.

It looks like that he will now permanently move to Essex, swiftly following former team mate Tom Hopper, who joined the Shrimpers on Friday.

It may not come as that much of a surprise as Mantom encouraged Hopper to sign for Southend following his experiences in Essex last season, where he started six games.

Now according to The Echo, Mantom is expected to sign for the Shrimpers soon, and is due to undergo a medical in the next 24 hours.

Mantom’s two seasons at Scunthorpe were severely disrupted by injury and he only managed 11 starts in the league.

He scored three goals in 2016-17 but only managed 19 appearances last season, as injury again hampered his progress.

Overall he made 45 appearances for Scunthorpe.

If Mantom does depart it leaves only Funso Ojo as the only recognised central midfielder, although Clayton Lewis is also able to play there.

“We have invested a lot of time in his development but I am not surprised because of his talent.

“What he showed performing on Sky in the latter half of the season probably brought him to the attention of a few more clubs. So credit to him and us for getting to that situation.

“He had the option to turn down the contract offer and explore opportunities elsewhere.”

As well as the Black Cats, Hull, Nottingham Forest and Blackburn have been credited with interest while Bristol City have had a compensation package turned down by Scunthorpe this week.

It’s tough competition for Sunderland who will have to hope their stature and potential under new ownership and management can entice Adelakun over a move to the Championship.

Bristol City confident of beating Hull City and Nottingham Forest to Scunthorpe United winger

Scunthorpe United have confirmed that they have rejected an offer of compensation from Bristol City for winger Hakeeb Adelakun – but the Robins are still confident of landing their target.

Adelakun is out of contract at Scunthorpe and has rejected a new deal at the club, meaning he is available to clubs on a free transfer.

However, because the player is under 24, the Iron are entitled to a compensation package for him – and the Robins have failed in making a compensation offer for him.

The Iron now state they are not in any formal negotiations with any club over Adelakun, but the Robins are still entitled to sign the player without agreeing compensation.

With Hull City and Nottingham Forest also said to be interested in the 22-year-old, there is a race for his signature.

Adelakun is said to be close to agreeing personal terms at Ashton Gate having already met with Lee Johnson.

The Robins made the offer of compensation in a bid to avoid going to a tribunal over the player, so will now have to negotiate with the Iron should they eventually sign Adelakun.

Earlier today, Iron manager Nick Daws said he was resigned to losing the player.

He said: “There has been a contract offer for Hakeeb for a considerable length of time but he has chosen to reject that. I fully expect Hakeeb will be with another club come the start of pre-season.

“I would have expected Hakeeb to announce where he was going but that hasn’t happened. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.”
