Championship giants Leeds United need a committed and commanding centre-back and ADO Den Haag‘s Tom Beugelsdijk is exactly that.

Leeds United fans were less than happy with Matthew Pennington’s defending in Friday night’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

The Everton loanee did absolutely nothing to stop Lewis Grabban nodding home the only goal of the game at Villa Park; another example of the meek, submissive defending that has marred the Paul Heckingbottom era so far.

You would never see the likes of Tom Beugelsdijk, the commanding, bullish centre-back Leeds tried to sign back in 2016, wilt under pressure quite like that.

According to the Mail almost two years ago, Leeds had sent scouts to watch the 6ft 4ins Dutchman in Eredivisie action, but ADO Den Haag blocked the move as they were not willing to let their warrior centre-half bid farewell.

Two years on, however, Beugelsdijk once again looks like exactly the sort of player Leeds are missing.

He is a real old school centre-back and a bona fide fan favourite due to his willingness to put his head, or any other body part, where it hurts to preserve his goal. Beugelsdijk shares plenty of similarities with fellow cult hero Pontus Jansson, although the Swede has been a shadow of his former self this season and has been linked with a move away in the summer.

Beugelsdijk, however, looks like the perfect replacement.

Back in February, the Dutch man-mountain secured a clean sheet in a backs-against-the-wall 1-0 win against Vitesse despite bleeding heavily from his head after an aerial battle went sickeningly wrong. He stayed on, however, and was rewarded with three points.
