That was some result for Leeds United’s U23’s as they clung on with 10 men to force Fulham to a penalty shootout in the Premier League Cup.

Then, at 5-4 and sudden death, Fulham’s Santos Clase fired over the bar to send Leeds through .

United took the lead just before half time when Barry Douglas was fouled in the box. Up stepped Ryan Edmondson to score the penalty to put Leeds 1-0 up.

It all fell apart for the home side early in the second half, when keeper Harrison Male took Fulham’s Jayden Harris down in the box to deny him a goal. Male was sent off, reducing Leeds to 10 men and forcing scorer Edmondson to be substituted.

Reserve keeper Joshua Rae failed to save the second penalty of the game, and moments later Fulham had taken the lead when Matt O’Riley slotted home to make it 2-1.

Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton were brought on in the second half, and on 78 minutes a great run from Clarke saw the ball crossed to Izzy Brown to fire in the equaliser. Game on, and Leeds managed to cling on through to the end of extra time to take the tie to penalties.

Fulham’s Steven Sessegnon was the first to miss from the spot, before Jordan Stevens saw his effort saved. In sudden death and at 5-4 to Leeds, Santos Clase blasted over to seee Leeds clinch the win and make it through to the final 8.
