Half-naked and with a flag emblazoned with the words ‘we’re going up’ tied around his shoulders, Shay McCartan couldn’t contain his delight after helping Lincoln City reach League One.
McCartan scored the Imps’ goal in the 1-1 draw with Cheltenham, who threatened to delay the promotion party for another week when George Lloyd headed home.
But with Mansfield and MK Dons failing to win, and once the necessary calculations had been completed, the party could finally begin.
“It feels fantastic,” he declared. “It was a bit of an anti-climax. We thought we’d messed it up and missed the opportunity, but once it was announced it was brilliant.
“To get promoted in front of our own fans was the objective and we’re all buzzing.
“It’s the best feeling I’ve had in football and my first promotion, hopefully the first of many.”
On his goal, McCartan added: “The gaffer was me telling before the game to shoot on sight, more or less.
“I was going to pass to Mark O’Hara and then I just thought ‘I’m going to spank this’. Luckily enough it’s bounced in front of the keeper and he made a bit of a meal of it.”
