Danny Welbeck suffered a gruesome-looking ankle injury as Arsenal’s qualification for the Europa League knockout phase came at a price.

A goalless draw was enough to see the Gunners through from Group E with Qarabag beating Vorskla in Ukraine.

But the result was overshadowed by the injury Welbeck suffered shortly before the half-hour mark when his right ankle appeared to get caught in the turf as he headed for goal.

The 27-year-old, called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the forthcoming friendly against the USA and Nations League clash with Croatia just six hours before kick-off, was given oxygen by club medics before being carried him off on a stretcher, with Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang coming on as a replacement.

Team-mate Matteo Guendouzi was close to tears at the sight of Welbeck’s injury, while his former Manchester United pal Nani, the Sporting captain, was quick to offer his condolences.

Welbeck is out of contract in the summer and if the injury is as bad as it first looked then he could even have played his final game for Arsenal .

Here are Tom Hopkinson’s player ratings.
