Rafa Benitez has insisted Newcastle United have not made an offer for Miguel Almiron yet.
The Paraguay winger has been linked with a move to Tyneside from MLS Cup finalists Atlanta United.
Atlanta supremo Darren Eales responded with a feisty interview last night insisting the club will not take “chump change” for the forward or consider a loan deal.
But Benitez reacted to the piece by saying: “I could hear somebody made an offer but we haven’t.
“I don’t talk about players.
“If we make an offer, they will know, we will know.”
Newcastle did send head of recruitment Steve Nickson over to the States for talks with his Almiron’s agent but nothing has moved beyond the discussion stage according to United sources.
Eales said: “I have seen some laughable things in the press, clearly we are never going to loan one of our players out and we are certainly not going to let them go for the ‘chump change’ that I have seen in some reports.
“If it’s a proper, serious offer then it’s something we would consider, but not for the laughable figures that I have seen mentioned in the press.”
