Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has slammed West Ham’s Joe Hart after the goalkeeper had a shocker in the 1-1 draw with Stoke on Monday night.
Hart, 30, messed up what was a relatively simple save to gift Peter Crouch the opening goal for the relegation-threatened Potters as the Manchester City shot-stopper’s career hit yet another low at the London Stadium.
Andy Carroll’s late goal managed to spare some of Hart’s blushes, but ex-Manchester United right-back Neville had no sympathy for the England international in his post-game analysis.
“I do not, to be fair, know what Joe is doing,” Neville said on Monday Night Football, as quoted on the Sky Sports website. “He will look back and not know what he is doing and I have no explanation really for it.
“He makes a right mess of it and I think he gets a really good sight of it actually.”
He added that he was also concerned by Jack Butland’s performance at the other end of the pitch: “I would be worried because I think both of them did not cover themselves in glory.
“Hart had a nightmare for that goal, and you are thinking about the pressure of a World Cup and the form you need to go into a World Cup – this is a serious competition that to be fair eats you alive.
“And Jack Butland did not display great confidence in what I would call the difficult moments where balls came into the box.”
Hart has made 22 appearances in all competitions for West Ham this season.
Football Insider verdict
Hart’s career has hit a major wall over the last couple of years. It all started with this horror show with England at Euro 2016 before Pep Guardiola axed him because he wanted a ‘sweeper keeper’. The 30-year-old had a poor season at Torino and things have failed to improve at West Ham, with his poor performances outweighing the good ones, which have been few and far between. It will not be long before David Moyes drops him to the bench again because it’s not worth him playing a loanee at this stage of the campaign when other options seem better. It’s hard to see how this nightmare ends for Hart.
