Kurt Zouma admits heads were down in the Stoke City changing room after Monday night’s 1-1 draw at West Ham, but he insists the players will be up for the fight when they take on Burnley this weekend.

The relegation-haunted Potters were heading for a crucial victory at the London Stadium after Peter Crouch pounced on a fumble by England goalkeeper Joe Hart to fire them ahead 11 minutes from time.

But Andy Carroll struck in the 90th minute to salvage a draw for the Hammers and leave the Stoke players devastated at seeing two precious points snatched from their grasp.

Zouma, who was filling in at right-back for the injured Glen Johnson, told the Evening Standard: “We should have won this game. That was the target. Obviously we are a bit sad with the goal we conceded at the end, but I think we did well. We defended well.

“We scored the first one, and we wanted to keep a clean sheet but unfortunately we couldn’t.

“Our heads are a bit down, but there are still four games to go and we still believe we can stay in the Premier League. We have to be focused for Sunday.”

The Potters now face a Sunday lunchtime clash with high-flying Burnley, who still harbour ambitions of playing in Europe next season. Then comes games against Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Swansea.

Although the bookies have Stoke nailed on to be relegated, loan man Zouma does not regret his season-long stay in the Potteries.

The 23-year-old, who has played all but five of Stoke’s Premier League matches this term, said: “I came here to play and I did, so I’m happy with the move.

“When I know I’m still in the Premier League with Stoke, then I will see about my future, but not now.

“I’m just focused on my team and try and keep them in the Premier League and win games, that’s the most important thing. That’s the most that I want. It doesn’t matter about the rest at the moment.”
