Peter Crouch told West Ham goalscorer Andy Carroll “you’ve killed us”, but then refused to give up on the Potters.

Stoke were poised for a vital three points after riding their luck at the London Stadium before snatching a late lead through the veteran Crouch.

But as the clock ticked down, and with Stoke backs against the wall, Carroll vollied home the Hammers’ equaliser to ensure the match ended all square.

Reflecting on what might have been for the Potters, Crouch told Sky Sports: “We had five minutes left, and it would have been a vital win for us.

“We said before the game that to come here and get three points would give us a lifeline, but getting a draw is still a good result.

“It would have done us the world of good to get the win, but it was a great finish by Andy.”

Stoke are now level on 28 points with Southampton in the bottom three, but still five short of safety and with a much poorer goal difference compared to their rivals.

Crouch was a 70th-minute substitute for midfielder Moritz Bauer as Stoke boss Paul Lambert went for broke.

And his hunch paid off when Crouch took advantage of Joe Hart’s fumble to put Stoke ahead and in doing so become their top Premier League scorer, his tally of 44 goals taking him past Jon Walters.

Crouch added: “The manager told me to just try to unsettle them and do what I do, and obviously keep following things in, and that’s what I did for the goal.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t hold on because I thought we defended so well during the game, so their goal was a killer, a bit of a kick in the teeth.

“Since this manager’s come in weve showed a lot of fight, a lot of character, and we’re not shipping goals goals like we were, but we have been a little bit unlucky at times and it was the same again today.”

But despite his comments to Carroll, Crouch is not quite ready to admit defeat in Stoke’s relegation battle.

He explained: We’ve got Burnley, Palace Swansea and Liverpool. There are winnable games in there. And if we can win three of them then who knows what will happen?”
