Neither Arthur Masuaku nor Aaron Cresswell have particularly impressed at left-back from a defensive point of view either this season or last, and West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini should be considering his options.
One of those would be to start Angelo Ogbonna – who has found himself behind Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop for a spot at the heart of the defence in recent weeks – in that postition instead of his isial centre-back spot.
It may sound like a bit of a crazy idea on paper, but the Italian actually featured in that position a number of times for Torino previously, and there is no doubt that he has the required pace and defensive nous to be more effective in terms of keeping things tight than either Masuaku or Cresswell.
Of course, the east London outfit would likely lose some of their attacking threat by making the change, but following another disappointing display by the Frenchman in the defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion last time out it may well be one that is needed.
West Ham’s fixture against arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the London Stadium next weekend could be the ideal match to try it out, with the Hammers backline likely to come under pressure from the likes of Son Heung-Min, Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura.
We want Irons fans to tell us whether they would like to see the 30-year-old come into the starting line-up at left-back by voting on our poll below.
