Rangers manager Graeme Murty believes Ross McCrorie will get better after his Old Firm horror show in Sunday’s 4-0 thrashing by Celtic – and admitted the 20-year-old defender is “in a bad place” after his Hampden dismissal.

McCrorie was sent-off for hauling down Moussa Dembele and giving away a penalty shortly after half-time and Murty insists that is the “harsh reality” of football.

The Gers defender has only recently returned to action after several months on the sidelines with torn ligaments in his foot – but Murty believes McCrorie is “in command of the situation.”

“He will learn from the experience. He is playing against a good player but he is in command of the situation and he will learn from this and make sure that he gets better for it,” Murty said, as quoted by the Evening Times.

“I feel for him but it is the harsh reality of the game and when you make mistakes at this level you get punished.

“Right now he is in a bad place, as he should be. It is a learning experience for him.”

McCrorie has made 20 appearances for the Light Blues this season after making his first-team debut in September.

The former Under-20s captain has immediately made himself a vital part of Murty’s side and was badly missed while he was out injured.

Football Insider verdict

McCrorie should come out of this a better player – but right now that will be scant consolation to Rangers fans after watching their side be torn apart by Celtic on Sunday. The 20-year-old has a bright future at Ibrox but needs to bounce back quickly after Sunday’s nightmare at Hampden and get back to his best. With Hearts visiting Ibrox this weekend, McCrorie will have a chance to get last weekend’s disaster out of his system and try to help the Gers secure second-place in the Scottish Premiership table.

In other Rangers news, the Gers will be waving goodbye to this fan favourite in the summer after Dave King dropped a huge hint.
