Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday was substituted early by manager Graeme Murty.

There is nothing more embarrassing for a professional footballer than to be substituted before half-time if he is playing poorly.

Except if you are Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday, as his embarrassment was taken up to the next level by the occasion.

Manager Graeme Murty hooked Halliday 40 minutes into Rangers’ Old Firm Scottish Cup semi-final with Celtic.

Rangers were 2-0 down at the time, when Murty substituted a furious Halliday and brought Josh Windass in his place.

Halliday was angry and understandably so, to be humiliated on a big day with friends and family in the crowd and watching at home.

Murty’s tactics and team selection were poor at Hampden, and to even start Halliday was a big gamble.

But Murty could quite easily have simply waited to half-time to bring Halliday off, instead of humiliating him in the way he did.

Rangers have now lost their last two games to Celtic and there may be no recovery from this one for Murty.

Halliday was not playing well but he was not the only one. Rangers fans feel Murty simply used as a scapegoat to deflect from his own failings.

Here is a look at how Rangers fans reacted on Twitter to Murty’s decision…

Murty never should have started Halliday but think the way he treated him yday was shocking!

I don’t know who said what here. I like Halliday. He is a Rangers man but so am I. He isn’t good enough but today he was flung under the bus by Murty. No player got pass marks. Disgusted by the lot of them. Murty, go now. Seen more fight from my 8 year old sons team.
